Letter Guidelines
At Indy LFOE, we aim to spread kindness and love to isolated seniors through heartfelt, handwritten letters. To accomplish this, we ask that you carefully follow our letter-writing guidelines. Adhering to these guidelines ensures that your messages are thoughtful, respectful, and uplifting, creating a positive impact in the lives of the seniors we serve.
Legibility and length.
Ensure your handwriting is legible and large, and check for spelling or grammatical errors to keep your message clear.
Write at least 5-7 sentences to create a meaningful letter, but avoid making it too long.
2. Be kind and encouraging.
Use warm, positive language to spread kindness and joy.
Share uplifting messages, like well wishes, favorite quotes, stories, jokes, or words of encouragement.
Choose inclusive language that’s welcoming to all readers. Please avoid slang or abbreviations that might be difficult to understand.
3. Keep it personal but appropriate.
Introduce yourself briefly (e.g., your first name, hobbies, or a fun fact).
Avoid sharing overly personal details like your address, phone number, or social media.
4. Avoid sensitive topics.
Refrain from mentioning sensitive topics such as illness, death, politics, and religion.
5. Embrace creativity.
Feel free to use colorful pens, art supplies, or drawings to make your letter visually appealing!
*Please note that we do not accept letters with glitter.
6. Respect privacy.
Please do not ask for personal details or try to initiate ongoing communication.
*7. Submission requirements.
*This submission process is specific to Indy LFOE. If you wish to participate in the international Love For Our Elders program, letters must be sealed in envelopes and mailed with postage. For more information about the international program, please visit loveforourelders.org.
At Indy LFOE, we currently only accept letters through designated drop-off locations. Please follow these guidelines when submitting your letters:
Submit your completed letters to one of our designated letter box locations. A list of these locations is provided on the “Letter Box Locations” page.
Please do not include your letter in an envelope or attach stamps. This makes it easier for our team to review and prepare your letters for distribution.
Place your completed letters into the drop-off boxes for review by Indy LFOE staff. If you’d like to receive volunteer hours for your work, make sure to visit the “Volunteer Hours” page to fill out the verification form!
By following these guidelines, you’re helping us streamline the process and ensure your letters reach seniors with love and care. Thank you!
