FAQ
About Indy LFOE:
Q: What is Indy LFOE?
Indy LFOE (Love For Our Elders) is a youth-led 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to fighting statewide senior isolation through kindness and compassion! We do this through handwritten letters and local volunteer efforts, bringing joy to seniors in care homes and communities across Indiana.
Q: How is Indy LFOE different from the international Love For Our Elders organization?
While we partner with and closely collaborate with the international Love For Our Elders organization (loveforourelders.org), Indy LFOE focuses on connecting Indiana communities through regional chapters, events, and outreach tailored to local elders.
Writing Letters:
Q: How do I write a letter?
Writing a letter is simple! Start with a kind greeting, share something about yourself, and include uplifting and encouraging words. Sign your name, and feel free to decorate your letter! See our Letter Guidelines for more information.
Q: Where do I send my completed letters?
Please drop off completed letters (without envelopes or stamps) at one of our handmade letter donation boxes at participating locations or events. Visit the Letter Box Locations page for more information!
Q: Can I earn volunteer hours by writing letters?
Yes! We offer 15 minutes of service for each letter you complete that follows our guidelines. Visit the Volunteer Hours page for more information.
Q: Can I write my letters digitally?
While we very strongly encourage handwritten letters to make them more personal, Indy LFOE does accept typed and printed letters with your signature and optional decorations.
Volunteering:
Q: How can I volunteer with Indy LFOE?
Outside of letter-writing, you can volunteer by organizing letter-writing events, joining a local chapter, or helping with administrative tasks like event planning or outreach. Visit the Join Us page to learn more.
Q: Do I need to be part of a school chapter to participate?
Nope! Anyone can participate, whether you’re part of a school chapter, a community group, or working individually.
Starting a School Chapter:
Q: How do I start an Indy LFOE chapter at my school or in my community?
Starting an Indy LFOE chapter is easy! If you’re a student at a presently non-participating, accredited Indiana educational institution, visit the Join Us page to fill out the Student Chapter Application Form. Once your application is approved, we’ll provide you with resources, funding, and ongoing support to help your chapter succeed!
Q: What are the responsibilities of a chapter leader?
Chapter leaders coordinate letter-writing activities, recruit volunteers, and ensure completed letters are collected and sent to Indy LFOE. Leaders also serve as the main point of contact between their chapter and our organization. Visit the Join Us page for more information.
Elders & Recipients
Q: How are elders chosen to receive letters?
We partner with local care homes, senior centers, and other organizations to identify elders who could benefit from receiving letters. Visit Our Partners to see a list of our partnering locations!
Q: Can I write to a specific elder?
Currently, we do not allow writing to specific elders to maintain privacy and inclusion. If you’d like to write to a specific senior, visit the international LFOE organization at loveforourelders.org!
Donations & Partnerships:
Q: How can I support Indy LFOE financially?
As a 501c(3) nonprofit organization, all donations are tax deductible and help us cover postage, supplies, and event costs. If you’d like to be a donor, you can donate directly through our website. All contributions are greatly appreciated! Visit our Donate page for more information.
Q: Can I partner with Indy LFOE to receive letter donations or host an event?
